Abstract

England is an economically developed country, which has undergone major socio-economic changes over the past 50 years. Its health problems are associated with modern lifestyle and an ageing population, and reflect inequalities in society. There are policies which should respond to these, and there is an established public health infrastructure. Improvements are needed, but the opportunity is there for significant change.
